Introducing the Jupiter Audio Subterfuge A
“Why have two versions of the same subwoofer?” would be the first question I’d ask. It’s simple: the Subterfuge, from the get-go, was designed to do double duty for both music and movies. The Subterfuge A (the “A” is for Audiophile) has an upgraded amplifier section designed mainly for use in music applications to reinforce the bottom end of speakers that need a little help in the bottom few octaves. I’m not going to lie: I fully expected this subwoofer to be as close to perfect as one can get in a powered subwoofer--clean, transparent, solid, with an excellent crossover section to offer excellent integration with the main speakers. The quandary with a powered subwoofer has always been that it’s anything but seamless when mating with another pair of speakers. It’s too easy to tell where the mains leave off and the sub begins. Make that way too easy. So, I already had the subwoofer that I felt was musical as all get-out, now the trick was to mate it with an amplifier that will allow it to excel in applications of bass reinforcement in music listening applications. And, big surprise, the amp is again from the Netherlands based company Hypex. This is an extremely clean amp with a very high damping factor, allowing for bass that is even more controlled than the standard Subterfuge. And, amazingly, it also incorporates a full 24 dB/octave electronic crossover for both the low pass section for the subwoofer, and the high pass section for the main speakers, with separate crossover frequency adjustments for each.
